Wampum Factory
For those of you who follow the Hawthorne News you know about Lafayette Hills. It is a development about to happen because of an admixture of a builders need and the needs of COAH which forces a state mandate for low cost housing. There has been much in the way of protest about the number of units being put into the development and it again is to come to the town planning board. My son Mark recently found out that the land is the site of an 18th century Wampum Factory. He obtained a paper written by a local archeologist which details the history of excavations at the site and it makes for great reading even if you are not in the least interested in the development. So I present the paper below. It is from the North Jersey Highlander in 1982 and authored by Ed Lenik.
